Former PAS man Hanafi hopes to catch fallout votes from main candidates (the star online)

BUTTERWORTH: Before nomination day on Aug 16, Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) president Hanafi Hamat was a virtual unknown in Permatang Pauh.

The preacher would still remain a face in the crowd but for a huge, flashy ring on his left hand.
Ringing in good luck: Hanafi showing off his eye-catching emerald bauble which he claims has brought him a lot of luck.

The Kelantan-based 61-year-old claimed that the eye-catching accessory was a good luck charm.

“It is an emerald ring which I have been wearing for as long as I can remember – my cincin pembawa tuah (lucky ring),” he smiled.

Asked if he was nervous about losing his by-election deposit, the father of 12, who is still fighting on, said that he stood a good chance of winning even though he only started campaigning on Thursday.

“Both PKR and Barisan Nasional supporters have come by my operations centre in Prai since Aug 16 to offer their encouragement.

“I sincerely believe that people are disgusted and fed up with all the mudslinging between these parties - their style of campaigning is too much because it incites hatred. This is not our culture.

“Barisan and PKR may seem strong but they are rapuh (crumbling) because they practise the politics of hate,” he said, adding that voters “wanted” what Akim offered.

“They want and need what we offer – harmony and peace between all races in the context of Islam. I may not be from here but I am confident I will get the support of the locals because the basic ideology of Akim is applicable in all states and constituencies,” the former PAS man said.

Asked if his family was here to help campaign, he said his wife was back in Kelantan but two of his sons were with him here.

“Our campaign is to talk and explain our principles - not to criticise others,” he said.

Tarikh mengundi bawa banyak tuah: Arif Shah (Berita Harian Permatang Pauh)

- Bernama

Bertaubatlah Arif dan Hanafi
